FTP:File Transfer Protocol
FTP allows you to transfer files onto the server of your internet service provider. For our purposes this will be csulb. The University allows you to store up to 25megabytes on your account which uses the same username and password as your csulb email account. You can temporarily exceed 25 megabytes to transfer files.
Use the application Fetch in the lab or other on campus locations. If you want to ftp stuff from other locations such as home or work you can download Fetch or similar applications from the web. Most of them have a free try out period and some are totally free. Fetch can be aquired for Free if you are a student! Another nice application on the Mac is Transmit which has a demo version that you can use for 10 minutes at a time. It costs $25 to purchase.
In Fetch you will be asked for the host name, in other applications it may
be ask for the server:
Enter: ftp.csulb.edu
You will then be asked for your username and password. This is the same as your csulb email.
Fetch can be used as a drag and drop application. Simply drag items you want to place on the server into your directory folder that is displayed in Fetch. To take something off of the server grab it from your directory and place it in your documents folder.. If this does not work on your computer then try using the “put” and “get” button interface after making selections from each fetch window. You may even prefer this method. Remember "Put" means your are putting a file from your computer onto the server. "Get" means you are retrieving a file that is on the server.
*Also, if you cannot use the drag/drop interfac then you will need to set your download folder from >special>preferences>download(tab)>download to folder. select your folder or appropriate location from the dialog box that will pop up.
If you have a PC you can use
Internet Explorer instead of Fetch to FTP by following the guidelines
